Rather than treating painting as a vehicle for image-making, he reframes it as an inquiry into what makes the image possible in the first place. He compresses the stretcher, canvas, and pigment—the three fundamental strata of painting—into sculptural units that assert their own materiality. Disassembled frames are cast in plaster, forming independent structures; these hollowed forms are then filled with a pulp-like mixture of pigment and mulberry paper, transforming the surface from a site of depiction into one of physical presence.
In this process, painting escapes the flatness of the pictorial field. What was once considered background becomes the core of the work. Cho is not interested in revealing the backside of painting, but actively repositioning its hidden infrastructure as a sculptural proposition—reconfiguring the logic of painting itself.
조성재의 작업은 전통적 회화가 은폐해온 구조적 조건을 드러내는 데서 출발한다. 그림을 지탱하는 나무 틀, 그 위를 덮는 천, 그리고 그 위에 올려지는 색이라는 위계적 구성요소들은 통상적으로 회화에서 ‘배경’이나 ‘보조물’로 간주되며, 그림의 표면 너머로 사라진다.
하지만 그의 작업에서는 이 보이지 않던 구조들이 오히려 주인공으로 떠오른다. 조성재는 회화라는 장르를 ‘이미지를 만드는 일’이 아닌 ‘무엇이 이미지를 가능하게 하는가’에 대한 탐구로 전환시키며, 캔버스의 틀-천-물감이라는 세 가지 물리적 층위를 하나의 압축된 조형으로 통합한다. 해체된 캔버스의 틀은 석고로 캐스팅되어 하나의 형상으로 독립되고, 그 안을 종이죽과 안료로 만든 색반죽으로 채워 넣음으로써, 각각의 조각은 더 이상 그림의 바탕이 아닌 스스로의 조형성과 질량을 가지게 된다.
이 과정에서 회화는 화면에서 벗어나며, 보조물은 조형의 중심으로 전환된다. 단순히 회화의 뒤를 보여주는 것이 아니라, 그 뒤의 구조가 전면에 나서며 회화의 개념 자체를 재구성하는 것이다.
